Six fatal cases of cytomegalic inclusion disease in infants are described. The series comprised one stillbirth and 5 infants of ages up to 14 months. The inclusions were of the type found in the salivary gland of guineapigs, and in a considerable proportion of normal infants, but in the cases in question they were widely distributed throughout the body and occurred particularly in the lungs, liver and kidneys, and the lesions produced were sufficiently severe to be regarded as the cause of death. The cases were variously diagnosed as purpura, whooping cough, enteritis and bronchopneumonia, and the correct diagnosis was only madepost mortem. The case reports and pathological findings are given in detail, and an analysis is also given of 66 similar cases reported in the literature. The authors maintain that the disease must be due to a virus, in view of the presence of inclusion bodies which resemble those of salivary gland disease of guineapigs. It is suggested that the disease is a common cause of fetal death. [Inclusions may be present in a number of non-infective conditions, and are not now regarded as unequivocal evidence for the presence of a virus. This disease was.at one time actually considered to be a protozoal infection.]D. J. Bauer.
