In this paper1 we develop a unified description of the functions of case-marking morphemes in Australian languages. The central observation is that such morphemes may operate at a number of syntactic levels. Thus, for example, they may function to relate nominals to other nominals within noun phrases, noun phrases to predicates within clauses, and clauses to other clauses within complex sentences. It follows from this that words may be multiply inflected with case morphemes indicating their role in syntactic constituents at different levels. As we show in this paper, such multi-level case-marking is widespread in Australian languages and follows general patterns. However, the extent to which it may occur in any particular language depends on what grammatical units are possible arguments of given" case predicates" and on language specific marking conventions and morpheme sequence constraints. In the remainder of this introductory section we outline a typology of case functions (1.1). We then describe the range of conventions which govern the ordering and extent of case-marking in particular languages (1.2). Discussion of morpheme sequence constraints follows the detailed description of case-marking functions in the body of the paper. 2
