The general technique of secondary ion mass spectrometry was substantially improved by the discovery that use of sulfolane as solvent containing, e.g., lithium iodide, sodium iodide, silver tetrafluoroborate, or thallium tetrafluoroborate, will routinely provide easily detectable molecular ion complexes. [The analysis of the antineoplastic agents bryostatin and carminomycin is illustrated.].
