Many patients with arteriosclerosis lack currently identified risk factors and no risk factors have been consistently identified for restenosis after coronary angioplasty. Therefore, the identification of additional factors which contribute to atherogenesis is necessary to develop therapeutic strategies that can further reduce the incidence of atherosclerosis and restenosis. The purpose of this paper is to consider the evidence that infectious agents induce alterations in cells of the vascular wall that predipose to both of these disease processes. We will focus mainly on the potential role of herpesviruses, and in particular cytomegalovirus, since work in several laboratories over the past 23 years has contributed a substantial body of data pointing to a causal role for this virus in atherosclerosis and, more recently, in restenosis.
