A morphologic study of 43 strains of Bact. tularense of diverse geographic and pathologic sources by means of fixed smears stained by ordinary dyes, by flagella and capsule stains, by dark field examination of cultures, and by supravital staining of cultures, demonstrated that this polymorphous organism is nonmotile and unencapsulated, and that its morphologic units consist of flattened and cylindrical bacillary forms, globules, globi, delicate filaments, and minute minimal reproductive units. Its chromatin is usually peripherally located. All 43 strains were morphologically identical. No morph. feature was found to differentiate virulent from avirulent strains. Apparently it possesses multiple modes of reproduction, of which budding, pullulatiqn of filaments, and formation of minimal reproductive units in various ways are the commonest. Division by binary fission was not observed, though it may occur. The species is biologically more closely related to, though apparently distinct from, the pleuropneumonia group than to any other group known. The present classification in Pasteurella, Brucella, or Cocco-bacterium are untenable. Morphologic units are illustrated by drawings and by photomicrographs.
