This editorial discusses studies of optical illusions in Japan. This special issue includes seven articles on tilt illusions, the Ponzo illusion, assimilation and contrast in optical illusions, illusory contours, the moon illusion, apparent transparency, and the effect of haptic information on optical illusions. None of the papers in this issue are concerned with the effects of temporal factors, even though they are important determinants of optical illusions. Illusions are highly influenced by the reduction or the prolongation of presentation times. Optical illusions in animals are also discussed. This issue will attract the attention of a large number of scientists interested in optical illusions and related problems internationally, as well as promote the investigation of this fascinating topic and lead to a better understanding of the mysteries of optical illusions.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
