The Aragusuku dialect (hereafter Aragusuku) is an areal variety of the Miyako language spoken in the southeastern area of Miyako Island in the southern Ryukyus (Figure 5. 1). The main characteristics are the “fricative vowel”(eg,[ks̞ks̞]‘listen’), thepresenceof threereflexivemarkers (differentiatedaccording to person, number and case), a double-nominative construction that is sensitive to the possessive relationship between the two subject NPs (eg, karjaa miinudu kagimunu ‘As for him,(his) eyes are beautiful’), etc. figure 5.1 Map of Ryukyuan (Shimoji 2010: 3) and AragusukuFew previous studies have focused on the southeastern area of Miyako, much less on the Aragusuku dialect. Besides three relevant papers on particular topics (Inagaki1966onaccent, Tabira2018onmodification, Takahashi2018oncase marking), theauthor’sMAthesis (Wang2019a) providesapreliminarydescription, but many issues are left unresolved. This chapter is a considerably revised version enriched by up-to-date data and analyses. 1
