DiscussionAlthough macular fluid is associated with optic disk pits, the origin of the fluid, be it CSF, the vitreous, or otherwise, may be irrelevant; what is important is the fluid must be entering the retina under a head of pressure. Previous attempts at repair have included gas tamponade with or without laser photocoagulation near the nerve. However, laser energy is principally absorbed by pigment in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, while some of the earliest and most pronounced changes in optic disk maculopathy usually do not occur deep in the retina adjacent to the nerve.
