The expression of the Group I disease resistance response genes (pI49, pI176, and pI206) ofPisum sativumcv. Alaska is strongly associated with resistance interactions withFusarium solani, Pseudomonas syringaepv.pisi, and the fungal elicitor chitosan. The cDNAs for these genes were recloned into the Bluescript KSm13+ vector and sequenced. Optimal alignment of the pI49 and pI176 cDNAs resulted in an overall identity of 95%, suggesting that these genes may be part of a multigene family. The cDNA for pI206 appeared to be 5′-truncated. Although the mRNA for pI206 as measured by Northern analysis was approximately 950 nucleotides, the entire cDNA, excluding the poly(A) tail, was only 594 bp long. The predicted molecular weights of pI49 and pI176 are 16728 and 16901 Da, respectively, while the pI206 gene product is thought to be at least 19360 Da. The 158 amino acid PI49 sequence differed by only 5 amino acid substitutions and one insertion/deletion from the 159 amino acid PI176 sequence.
