INVESTIGATORS often desire to group large numbers of persons, jobs, or objects into smaller numbers of mutually exclusive classes in which the members have similar characteristics. When the grouping is done in a manner that establishes a taxonomy of mutually exclusive clusters wherein each larger unit is a unique combination of the next-subordinate units, the clusters are called &dquo;hierarchical groups.&dquo; Such groupings have proved particularly useful for classification purposes. For example, plants and animals may be hierarchically grouped with respect to genetic characteristics; library holdings grouped in terms of their contents to facilitate storage and retrieval of information; persons (or jobs) grouped in terms of specified characteristics for purposes of personnel administration. While grouping ordinarily results in some loss of information, it may generate new information as well as increase the efficiency with which large’ masses of data can be considered. Therefore the tech-
