Permeation rates of hydrogen, helium, methane, nitrogen, ethylene, and argon through asymmetric porous cellulose acetate, hydrolyzed cellulose acetate propionate, and polysulfone membranes have been measured at room temperature. The experimental data have been analyzed by a transport equation which incorporates terms for a pore size distribution on the membrane surface. The mechanism of transport involves simultaneous Knudsen, slip, viscous, andsurface flow through the porous structure. The analysis is useful for membrane characterization and prediction of performance with respect to a reference gas.
