T he late South African activist Simon Nkoli made this proclamation in 1990 while speaking to a crowd gathered in the streets of Johannesburg to participate in South Africa’s first gay and lesbian pride march. He would become a member of the executive committee of the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality (NCGLE, or the Coalition) upon its formation in 1994 and thus a key figure in that organization’s successful campaign to include the term sexual orientation in postapartheid South Africa’s constitutional equality clause. As a result of this lobbying effort, South Africa became the first country in the world to constitutionally entrench the rights of homosexuals, and the Coalition could lay claim to the rather unique distinction of having included gay and lesbian issues in a liberation struggle.
