This study investigated the numbers and characteristics of deaf people in the United States as of 1974. The subjects were classified as "prevocationally deaf." The sampling method called upon a national list compiled and verified through interviews. A sample size of 42,000 households was drawn. The findings provide demographic material which is recognized by the National Association of the Deaf as a basis for information on the deaf population. Demographic characteristics noted in the study include sex, age, education, income, travel behavior, employment status, household information, communication, insurance problems and experience with vocational rehabilitation.
