Women 1 day to 8 weeks after parturition were 6 non-secretors of blood-group substances in saliva including 3 each of blood type A or O, and 2 secretors each of A, H or B, H or H substances, including three of blood type A, two of B and one of O. In milk or colostrum, total hexose was normal, range 32 to 96 mg per ml between the 12 women, but 2'-fucosyllactose was for secretors 0.24 to 0.46 mg per ml and in non-secretors none was detected. Results confirm the finding of Kuhnet al. (Chem. Ber., 1955, 88, 1135) that the presence of 2'-fucosyl-lactose was independent of blood type, and support the hypothesis of Watkins and Morgan (Vox San-guinis, 1959, 4, 97) and Watkins (Science, 1966, 152, 172) that the H gene is responsible for the fucosyl transferase necessary for conversion of Lea to Leb substance and production of H substance, later converted to A or B substance, and that its absence in non-secretors allows secretion of Lea substance irrespective of blood type.-M.
