Swimming speed and endurance of the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua L., were measured in a swimming flume at temperatures between -0.3 and 1.4-degrees-C. The maximum sustained swimming speed for fish 0.36-0.52 m long was between 0.9 and 1.0 body lengths per second (BL s-1). Endurance reduces as swimming speed is increased. All fish measured were unable to swim for more than 1 min at 3 BL s-1. The results are discussed in relation to the selectivity of survey trawls in northwest Atlantic waters where the cod are found in waters of temperatures ranging from < 0 to > 8-degrees-C.
