The problem considered is that of the consolidation of a soil stratified in horizontal layers, with the simultaneous possibility of overall drainage both vertically to pervious layers above or below the series of strata, and horizontally to vertical sand drains. A general solution is obtained for any sequence of horizontal strata in which the coefficients of compressibility and permeability for horizontal and vertical flow are regarded as arbitrary functions of the vertical co-ordinate. Solutions are obtained for both the two-dimensional and the radially symmetrical cases, and a special treatment is given for equal alternate layers such as clay and silt or clay and sand.
