Some risk factors are new, while others were previously known but became recently more and more significant. Some are related to a specific ecoepidemiological entity, others affect all forms of leishmaniasis. The leishmaniases include four major eco-epidemiological entities: zoonotic ZVL) and anthroponotic AVL) visceral leishmaniasis, zoonotic ZCL) and anthroponotic ACL) cutaneous leishmaniasis. In anthroponotic forms man is considered to be the sole source of infection for the sandfly vector; in contrast, in zoonotic transmission cycles, animals are involved and play a role of reservoirs which disseminate the Leish-
