Incorporation of an isoelectronic nitrogen atom in place of a methine group in the indole molecule increases the basic strength and reduces the lipid[long dash]water distribution ratio. Depending on the position of the doubly bonded nitrogen atom, the azaindoles exert pharmacological effects on smooth muscle and the central nervous system that either mimic or oppose the actions of indole.
