Two pierid butterflies show conditional oviposition strategies, where low-ranked hosts are selected only when primary hosts are rare or absent. These two butterflies are of highly divergent ecologies; in these and other species, conditional oviposition does not obviously correlate with population parameters. We suggest that conditional host use may be more frequent than is presently recognized and that there is a systematic bias against discovering a behaviour which is only occasionally expressed.
