The effect of iron oxide coatings on surfaces of inorganic clay-size aluminosilicates extracted from Chilean volcanic ash soils was studied by electrophoretic mobility measurements. The zero point of charge (ZPC) determined for allophane is around 4.5. Theoretically computed values of ZPC are coincident with those determined by electrophoretic migration when surface compositions are representative of the whole composition of the particles. The ZPC values obtained for iron oxide-coated particles, about 9.3, are similar to those computed and determined for noncrystalline iron and aluminum oxides. Experimental evidence supports the assumption that surface properties of these natural inorganic particles are mainly determined by iron oxides and secondarily by octahedrically coordinated aluminum.
