Directional aggregation (chain-like formation) of uniform cubic and spindle-type hematite particles caused by geomagnetic and superimposed magnetic fields is described. It was shown that the phenomena are affected in a most sensitive way by the particle size and shape. The importance of the ionic strength increases with the decreasing size of the dispersed matter. Theoretical calculations, that take into consideration the magnetic moment of the particle and the electrostatic repulsion, qualitatively predict the observed effects.
