Due to the very small print in exercises etc., some pages seemed a little crowded and hard to read (but this might, be a function of the age of the reviewer). Certain illust, rations (like 4.6 on page II), terms (like supremum on page 392; incidentally, a printing error here unfortunately makes the likelihood ratio always equal to one), and definitions (like event class on page 60) seemed too difficult or out of place, but again the student, must be the final judge. The terms mean and variance are llsed before they are formally defined in Chapter 6, beginning on page 161. They would have found it convenient to have introduced those names earlier and it, mnst be very distressing to the students during some of t, hose discussions (for illustrations, see pages 110, 114, 140, and 157). I am certain that the last remark about generating random variables on page 125 was also confusing; frankly, I find that a simple F-1 is a very convenient tool to use even though there might be other less time-consuming methods and I would not have worried the student. While I can find certain parts of the presentation with which I disagree, this text is a welcome alternative in this important area. Depending on the local situation, it certainly should be considered for that first course in probability and mathematical statistics. Many (not all, I hope) will use it very satisfactorily.
