The influence of temperature on the changes in the acoustic properties of 28 freshly-felled pine (Pinus radiata) logs was determined using 4 proprietary acoustic tools: time-of-flight tools (TOF; TreeTap and Sylvatest Duo); and resonance tools (WoodSpec and Director HM200). Measurements were taken sequentially at -19°, 4°, 19°, 39° and -5°C, and again at -19°C. Below freezing, the acoustic velocity decreased by 7.2 and 10.4 m/second per °C for the TOF and resonance tools, respectively. Above freezing, the acoustic velocity decreased by 3.2 m/second per °C rise in temperature for the TOF tools, and 3.5 m/second for the resonance tools. The abrupt drop in acoustic velocity at 0°C was ∼1000 m/second, with the frozen wood being stiffer.
