In the United States, with changes to resident work hour rules and internal medicine residency procedure requirements, residents are no longer required to perform specific procedures as part of their training. Despite this change, residents continue to encounter patients needing procedures. No study has yet to quantify the amount of procedures residents encounter with the number performed. In our study, we explored internal medicine residents' decision making regarding the performance and referral of invasive bedside procedures, as well as objectively reviewed residents' procedure performance patterns.
