Secondary disease does not necessarily depend on a graft-versus-host immune reaction. Also compatible lymphoid cells are at least as important in reducing secondary disease as incompatible lymphoid cells are in causing it. Moreover, allogeneic lymphoid cells need not behave as incompatible in this situation if the degree of antigenic difference is small.
