Hidden or invisible disabilities are those that are not readily apparent to the observer and encompass a wide array of conditions. Like many disabilities they may have been acquired at birth or been obtained at a later time. Since their condition is not apparent to others, people with this type of disability can often feel a greater sense of stigma as their condition is not apparent to others and often feel as though others may think they are faking or dramatizing a condition. Chemistry laboratories are challenging environments and it may not be readily apparent what barriers are present for a student with a hidden disability as they acclimate themselves into a program. In some cases, the student themselves may not understand how their disability is impacting their progress. In this chapter we will look at a variety of factors and challenges that students with hidden disabilities might face in the laboratory. Suggestions for engaging stakeholders in conversations to meet the accommodation needs of students with hidden disabilities will also be covered.
