A method of determining the average survival and biting rate of a field population of biting flies is proposed. The method is suitable for short runs of data, where the population can be sampled daily for at least 20 days and the individuals categorized as nulliparous or parous. The method is also used to determine how the population parameters vary with time in cases where the population is sampled throughout the season. An analysis of a C. obsoletus group population, sampled in the UK 1979, is presented as an example. The analysis reveals changes in the survival and biting rate of the population throughout the season. The relevance of the population parameters to the potential vectorial capacity is discussed.
