During the Wimbledon tennis championships in 1981, officials were confronted with an un usual problem. Some male players, no tably Jimmy Connors, were regularly grunting loudly as they hit the ball. Their opponents protested, demanding that this practice be stopped. These qui eter players claimed the noises were distracting and were emitted deliber ately to throw off their timing. When officials confronted Connors and the other" vocal" players, they re ceived a slightly different explanation. Connors said that some players do grunt on purpose-but not him. He ex plained that he had no control over his grunting; it just happened when he hit the ball hard. Most of the other grunters were also willing to admit that some players did emit the sounds intentional ly, but each denied that he himself had any conscious control over these partic ular vocalizations.
