Insects have been used extensively as the experimental organisms of choice to study biochemical changes associated with the developmental patterns of higher eukaryotes. One has only to recall the contributions of Drosophila to biochemical genetics to realize its potential for probing the biochemistry of development. An in-depth discussion of macromolecular changes and control of gene activities during insect metamorphosis is limited by the format of this volume. First, much of the biochemical work is in relation to hormonal changes and has been reviewed recently (Sridhara et al., 1978). Second, much of the interesting recent progress in this field has occurred with two systems, both of which are discussed individually in this volume (Chapters 7 and 8). Third, due to the diversity of organisms and tissues studied as a function of a specific developmental age or hormonal milieu, few generalizations can be drawn from published data on macromolecular changes, particularly those pertaining to protein and RNA.
