Electromagnetic fields and currents are coupled systems. The electromagnetic field influences the motion of charged particles, and they produce the electromagnetic fields. The structure of the system is this: the Hamiltonian may be (neglecting all details and constants) symbolically written as H = H 00 − j · A. Here H 00 is the “bare” unperturbed Hamiltonian (without electromagnetic interactions between the particles), and j and A are the four-vectors of current and vector potential.
