Each muscle in the vertebrate limb is innervated by a motoneuron pool consisting of some hundreds of neurons. Since the central connectivity and therefore activation patterns differ between pools, it is important for normal function that each pool synapse only with its appropriate muscle. This article considers some of the mechanisms by which this matching is achieved during embryonic development in the chick.
