Mesotheliomas are primary tumors of the celomic cavity. About one third originate in the peritoneum and two thirds arise in the pleural cavity. Cystic mesotheliomas occur mainly in adults and are considered to be benign and curable. Primary occurrence in the liver has been demonstrated for histogenetically related localized fibrous tumors, which probably arise from submesothelial stem cells, but not for truly benign mesotheliomas. Extragenital adenomatoid tumors are also related lesions, which exhibit a more papillary growth. This is the first description of the radiologic findings and the surgical pathology of a benign cystic mesothelioma of the liver.
