METHODSThe methods used in this study were the same as those described in the previous paper (17). The only special procedure employed was deafferentation of the fornix. The feasibility and utility of experimentally eliminating the afferent fibers in the fornix as a method for studying recurrent pyramidal cell pathways has been demonstrated(46). Moreover, the same method has been applied more recently to studies of the cerebellar cortex (20). At least 3 weeks before acute experiments were carried out, one hippocampus was partially exposed and a cautery or fine razor blade sliver was used to cut the fornix and the hippocampal commissure under direct vision.(The cautery seemed superior to a knife as it produced less
