The positive ion mobility spectra of aliphatic and aromatic amines were measured. Reduced mobilities in air at 150, 200, and 250.degree.C were determined relative to that of lutidine (2,4-dimethylamine) taken as 1.95 cm2/(V s). This compound is hereby proposed as a standard reference compound for the mobility scale in positive IMS studies. A comprehensive reduced mobility data base of more than 100 amines is presented from these resulted and other published data. A number of trends in the mobility of isomers and isobars are observed. The reduced mobility increases in the order primary < secondary < tertiary amines, linear < branched, normal < secondary, aliphatic < aromatic, and amine < amide. Most interesting is the result that the temperature dependence of the reduced mobility is positive for low molecular weight ions, is essentially invariant for intermediate mass (90-180 amu) ios, and is negative for heavy ions.
