The effect of crude oil and its water-solube fraction (WSF) on fish eggs range from direct mortality to the retardation or acceleration of growth of embryos, to the development of morphogenic abnormalities in newly hatched larvae. The specific effect depends, in part, on the concentration of crude oil and the age of the embryos at time of exposure. While testing different crude oils on various life stages of Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes, a significant decrease in length of the egg incubation period and an increase in the opercular movement of unhatched embryos was noted.
