Sex differences, personal consistency, and the development of reciprocity in the pattern of self-disclosure exchange and the amount of disclosures expressed were expected in 65 opposite-sex interaction undergraduate dyads. High and low disclosers were expected to modify their disclosure levels as reciprocity developed. Time analysis of transcripts of conversations between 59 dyadic partners demonstrated no sex differences, a moderate degree of personal consistency (which declined with time), and a pattern of reciprocity (which emerged during the initial 5 min of interaction). While differences between disclosure levels of interactants declined, similarity in amount of disclosure was not established. Both high and low disclosers modified their disclosure levels over time, and disclosure levels decreased for both. It is suggested that future research should consider the structural, social, and personal variables in self-disclosure.(27 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
