Supernovae of type II must be related to rather massive stars. They appear to occur rather exclusively in the spiral arms of galaxies and this fact alone sets a lower limit of about 5M⊙to their main sequence mass. If we believe that all massive stars above some critical value become supernovae (and none below this value) the supernova rate would indicate masses in excess of 10 or 20M⊙, the precise value depending on the particular choice of the luminosity function. Arguments of this type, however, do not take into account the possible dependence of stellar evolution on the presence of a binary system and other factors like rotation.
