The mode I state of stress around a crack front, i.e. in a “wedge” of angleα= 2π, is well defined by the stress intensity factorKI. The stressσy=K1/√(2πr) becomes infinite at the vertex r = 0. It is known that if the sharp crack is rounded by a radius ρ, small with respect to crack length and other dimensions, the maximum value for the stressσyonly becomesσy=K1/√(πρ). By numerical solution of integral equations corresponding results are given for wedges of arbitrary angles π < α < 2π in state of modes I, II and III. The method was verified by comparison with the exact solution for mode III. Such an exact solution is not possible for modes I and II.
