CIRRHOSIS of the liver following the ingestion of certain species of the genus Senecio is a comparatively common disease amongst horses and cattle in stock-raising countries. In Nova Scotia it is known as Pictou disease, in New Zealand as Winton disease, while in South Africa there are fatal conditions known as Molten0 disease and “dunsiekte.” There has also been an outbreak in England (Cushny and Watt 1920) amongst cattle which had consumed a quantity of the species Senecio jacobEa (the common ragwort). This species is abundant in Norway where the cattle die of a disease known as “Sirasyke,” which has the characteristic symptoms of senecio poisoning. I n 1920 Willmot and Robertson reported eleven cases which had occurred in the poorer white population of a district in the Cape Province. The majority were in children and were fatal, This was apparently due to the contamination of wheat by seed from a species of senecio. The symptoms in the affected animals are similar in all countries. There is loss of appetite and weight, accompanied by diarrhea. Emaciation and ascites may be present and the animal has difEculty in standing and walking. Cerebral symptoms supervene, with difficulty in the maintenance of balance and a staggering gait. There may be marked frenzy. Coma follows and death occurs a few days after the first symptoms are observed. The disease is usually afebrile.Post-mortem examination shows a certain amount of jaundice of the mucosze. The surface of the liver is uneven and the tissue is tough when cut by the knife. Microscopic examination reveals various stages of the process. In the more acute and early types there is extravasation of blood round the central veins of the lobules. These have been called “blood pools” or “blood lagoons.” The liver cells in the vicinity of these areas degenerate and disappear. In the later stages there is a definite fibrosis which Theiler has called an “interstitial hepatitis.” There is a loss of the normal architecture of the liver and the cells are replaced by fibrous tissue,
