matter from different angles’ (p. 106) and pragmatism is ‘a willingness to postpone some doubt and still use the material for the best possible purpose(s)’ (p. 107). Essentially, this approach involves attempting to achieve a balance between relevance and rigour in order to achieve meaningful results, while recognising that interview accounts provide ‘clues’ rather than facts. A series of implications for research practice are set out in Chapter 7, where Alvesson re-states his scepticism from Chapter 3 of any advice on how best to conduct an interview. Yet, the earlier chapter contains some useful information on the practical aspects of planning, conducting and analysing interviews. It is suggested that rigorous sorting and categorisation of research data – for example, in grounded theory analysis – often take place at the expense of creative and critical thinking, but these activities are not mutually exclusive. It is also suggested that relying less on interviews and more on participant observation might help to enhance rigour and de-mystify the research situation. However, this method raises a number of ethical and methodological concerns that are not adequately discussed. Furthermore, there is no mention of alternative approaches such as the use of visual methods within or alongside interviews, which could be used as a part of ‘Viewing empirical materials as a source of inspiration for thinking or theory development rather than for a grounded description’ (p. 8). Interpreting Interviews achieves its goal of calling for a more reflexive approach than the conventional pipeline view of interviews. The book is virtually pocketsized and relatively short (at 152 pages), but represents good value for money. It will not be suitable for many novice researchers, but it should be recommended reading for anyone who teaches or studies qualitative research methods at advanced level.
