A colleague was recently introduced to a technology in a somewhat unconventional fashion. In an after class meeting with one of her students, she was somewhat surprised to see her own face pop up in a notification on the student’s smartphone. Understandably curious, the colleague asked the student, BWhat’s that?^ The initially embarrassed student proceeded to show the professor Group Me (https://groupme. com/), a group text messaging app. The student, along with other students in the course, had created a Group Me to share information related to her class, and used the professor’s picture from the university website for the group’s avatar.
