Recently, it has been shown that people differ in dispositional levels of affect intensity. The present study investigated the association between individual differences in effect intensity and dimensions of affiliation motivation. A sample of 133 subjects (89 females, 44 males) completed the Affect Intensity Measure and the Interpersonal Orientation Scale. The Interpersonal Orientation Scale focuses on four dimensions assumed to underlie affiliation motivation: positive stimulation, emotional support, attention, and social comparison. Correlational analyses revealed that dispositional levels of affect intensity are correlated positively with all four dimensions of affiliation motivation with the greatest correlation being between affect intensity and positive stimulation from others. It is proposed that affectively intense individuals affiliate with other people in order to facilitate the experience of strong emotions necessary to the achievement of an optimal level of arousal.
