The mouse mutant "dilute lethal" (symbol dl) arose spontaneously in strain C57BL/Gr and is an allele of Maltese dilution (d). It causes dilution of fur with clumping of pigment granules, like d, also clonic convulsions with opisthotonus and ataxia. These neurological symptoms appear at about 9 days and lead to death (probably from starvation) soon after weaning. Birth-weight is normal but growth falls off from about 10 days on. No gross defects were found in the brain or inner ear. d/dl Mice are phenotypically identical with d/d.
