The surface microflora of several fodder plants, in particular lucerne, red clover and timothy grass, was examined at various stages of maturity of the plant. There was no significant increase in total count until a late stage, and lactic acid bacteria were not found until after the stage at which the crops would normally have been ensiled. They were found only on the red clover, and their colonies grew weakly on the agar plates. These organisms, however, developed very rapidly under the conditions in the silo and the possibility that an inhibitory agent is associated with the living plant is suggested and is to be investigated further. Several of the organisms isolated from the surface microflora were antagonistic to a strain of the lactic acid bacteria isolated from the surface flora and, to a lesser extent, to a strain from silage and a pure strain ofLactobacillus plantarum.
