In the majority of today’s communication systems, the rapid increase of the operating frequency and the number of users together with the new applications such as broadband internet, telemedicine, and video conferencing put stringent conditions on the electrical and physical characteristics (size and mass) of the filters, i.e. the components that play a major role in the performance of a communication system. The demand of size, bulk, and mass reduction of microwave filters is on the rise in mobile base stations and wireless communication devices. In order to deal with this issue in the area of filter design, which is indeed a bulky part of each communication system, not only novel resonant structures should be considered but also the theoretical part of the filter design which deals with the synthesis techniques should be reconsidered. Therefore the main goal of this proposal is to solve the issue of size and mass reduction through incorporating novel resonant structures and introducing novel synthesis and modeling approaches. We will prove each new concept theoretically and will support the theory by the fabrication of different prototypes. The proposed ideas in this plan will be applicable in different scenarios that require highly efficient filters for addressing the challenges of future communication systems.
