International Cooperative Research on Architecture and Archaeology of Ancient City of Messene, Greece

Field Survey:The survey work was carried out for 35 days from July to August at the site of Temple of Askepios in ancient Messene. The work was supplementary because the most of the work on the surrounding stoas of the temple had been finished previously. Main work of th.s year was to describe the site and architectural members for final report and we could end up the most of our work for the site. During the rest of the days, we surveyed the architectural members of the Messene Temple in the agora. Some 30 blocks which were unearthed by Greek archaeologists were surveyed to be studied for its reconstruction.Separate d from the work at the archaeological site, local houses at Mavromati, where the archaeological site locates, were also surveyed for the purpose of architectural research. This is for the comparative study between modern and ancient houses in order to research living principles in the Mediterranean area. The levels were surveyed to make sections of the village and openings of the houses were photographed.Results:The survey of the Messene Temple resulted to that the temple had six columns on the front and 13 on the sides. The superstructure c f the temple was ambiguous and difficult to restore due to the poor condition of the preservation, although we could make restorational drawing with comparative study of the elevations of the contemporary temples.The styles of the openings of the local houses at Mavromati are categorized into two groups: One way to use wooden or stone lintels, and another way to use lintels with stone arches to reduce the weight over them. However, it is ambiguous to what extent the arches function from the structural viewpoint.
