The Journalism Education Project : Research and development to meet the needs of an increasingly flexible labor market in media employment

The main activities and achievements of this project are as follows :1.A book (Journalism Education -an Issue of the Day, published by University of Tokyo Press) was produced with the purpose of debating and publicizing the social significance of journalism education.2.Research was carried out on journalism education and professionalism, and the results of this work were made known in the form of academic papers and by other means.3.A questionnaire survey was conducted among graduates of the research student program in media studies at the Institute of Socio-information and Communication Studies (formerly the Institute of Journalism and Communication Studies) in order to determine the subjects' opinions and understanding of journalism education. The results of this survey were published in the Research Bulletin of the Institute of Socio-information and Communication Studies.4.Teaching methods were developed through practical implementation in experimental lessons carried out in the "Jo … More urnalism Seminar" for students in the research student program at the Institute of Socio-information and Communication Studies.5.A program of short-term training courses for career journalists was developed. Three such training courses were held.6.Three "Journalist Forums" were held, providing a space for working journalists to participate and exchange opinions as individuals.7.A journalism education textbook (Jissen Janarisuto Yousei Kouza [A Practical Training Course for Journalists], published by Heibonsha) aimed at new entrants to the profession was created and published.8.Links outside the academy were fostered by the holding of a joint symposium with the Japan Regional Newspapers Network.This research project attained significant results in all the fields listed. Important experience and material was yielded for the realization of journalism education in Japan, thus opening up prospects for future work in this field.
