The coating of cutting tools significantly influences their cutting behavior. The adaptation of the coating properties to process and material offers considerable potential for increasing productivity and process reliability. Due to a lack of knowledge in the areas of coating production and cutting behavior, the development of adapted coating systems is currently associated with great empirical effort. One possibility for generating a deeper understanding of the wear behavior of coated cutting tools and for reducing the number of required machining tests is the use of FE-based chip formation simulations. So far, the great potential of simulatively adapted coating systems has only been shown for the orthogonal cut and can therefore not yet be exploited industrially. A broad industrial application of process- and load-specific coated tools therefore requires the transfer and expansion of the current state of knowledge to other industrially applied manufacturing processes and coating systems, such as external longitudinal turning with PVD-TiAlN-coated carbide tools. The main objective of the planned transfer project is therefore to transfer the findings developed in two preceding projects together with the application partner WALTER AG to industrial boundary conditions with regard to the relevant coating systems and machining processes. The application partner will be able to use the simulation in the new and further development of tools efficiently and thus to increase its competitiveness.
