A Study of Totalized Systems for University Library Automation Operated in Campus Networks and Linked to the "Science Information Network."

A nationwide online shared cataloging system for university libraries, NACSIS-CAT, has become utilized over 110 universities. Another recent development seems to be the installation of LANs in universities with a node established in the library. This study is planned to propose a new schema of university library systems in the "Science Information System" concept, that is, totalized library automation systems operated in campus LANs with an efficient link to the nationwide cataloging system.The study consists of two parts: studies and developments directed to the totalized systems, and discussions on the future of university libraries. The former includes: (1) an analysis of the trend of library automation based on a questionnaire survey, (2) development of a prototype system, (3) an experiment on automatic checking function to maintain consistency between local and the nationwide systems, (4) a study on the systems of centralized configuration, and (5) those of distributed configuration with discussions of their pros and cons.The latter study was conducted for the following items: (6) a survey of the overseas situations with a comparative aspect with those for Japan, (7) an investigation on the applicability of hypertext technology on library catalog databases, (8) an analysis on the current problems, practical and institutional, on the inter-library loan system, (9) a vision towards the future ILL systems based on the high technology, (10) a fundamental investigation into the nature of catalog in the "electronic library," where entire material is stored onto electronic media.
