A Study on Diversification of Education and its Consolidation in Taiwan: A Critical Reflection of Ongoing Education Reform

本研究旨在对民主化台湾的教育改革进行批判性分析，特别关注教育的多元化。这里讨论的问题是(1)无休止的国家课程指导方针和学校教科书的争议，中国民族认同的“统一性”和台湾民族认同的“多样性”之间的竞争；(2)少数民族(原住民)教育的可能性和局限性；(3)大学和学院之间的差异，相互竞争减少学生。总的来说，从统一性到多样性的过渡无疑是90年代以来台湾教育改革的一种趋势。然而，仔细观察我们发现，教育多样化的多维现象在某些情况下面临着巩固的困难。

This research aimed to conduct a critical analysis on education reform in democratized Taiwan, paying special attention to diversification of education. The issues discussed here were (1)the never-ending dispute over national curriculum guidelines and school textbooks, rivalry between 'uniformity' of Chinese national identity and 'diversity' of Taiwanese national identity; (2) possibilities and limitations of education of ethnic minorities (the indigenous peoples); (3) differentiation among universities and colleges competing with each other for decreasing students. Generally, transition from uniformity to diversity is undoubtedly a trend of Taiwan's education reform since the 1990s. However, detailed observation tells us that the multidimensional phenomenon of diversification of education faces difficulty of consolidation in some cases.
